History of the Muslim Caftan
 
The caftan became prominent during the Abbasid Caliphate (8th–13th centuries), where it was a luxurious garment worn by caliphs and aristocrats, often made of silver or gold brocade with decorative buttons. Not much has changed in the Moroccan kaftan design.
 
The kaftan symbolized rank and status. Ottoman sultans wore elaborately decorated kaftans, often gifted to dignitaries. The Ottoman Empire (1299–1922) popularized the kaftan across the Middle East and Mediterranean. Ottoman kaftans featured rich fabrics like velvet and silk, with intricate embroidery and specific colors indicating the wearer’s rank.
