Hijabi Bride: 10 Ways to Make Sure Your Guests Don’t Outdress You

Updated: Jan 6

White is reserved for the bride if you’re having a white wedding. But what do you do when the color is open for everyone to choose? Lots of ladies and gents are getting lavish for the big day. You’re sure to have family members and guests who enjoy the wedding spirit so much they want to relive their own weddings while you’re having yours. But that can look inappropriate if it’s not clear who is the bride on your big day. Here’s ten ways to make sure you stand out perfectly as the hijabi bride.

1. Inform family and guests about your chosen colors

Yes, it’s a great idea to be up front. If you surprise your guests, they might surprise you in an unwanted way by wearing your colors! One of the best ways to inform your guests is to use your colors in your wedding invitation. A computerized drawing of the bride, groom and decor in the same colors is a clear sign that these are taken by the bridal party. Guests should know from the wedding invitation to wear different colors entirely.

And of course, your bridal party can use the same colors as yourself. Let your family know clearly if this is what you desire! It looks awesome in pictures if your mother, aunts, sisters and close friends are all wearing a muted version of your wedding colors. In this manner, family members are actually wearing the same colors, but their outfits should have less embroidery, layers and fullness.

The same can go for the groom and his party.

2. The groom must match

The groom is a match with an embroidered beige sherwani.

This brings us to the groom. The groom should match closely, if not exactly, by using the same colors and patterns that the bride is wearing. When the groom is by your side and matching, both in full regalia, it’s very clear who the bride is. The mothers of the bride and groom should coordinate their look. Hijabi Bridal Muslim groom outfits are a great place to start.

3. Make sure your skirt is very full and puffy

If you’re wearing a bridal lehenga or a Muslim wedding dress, the skirts are crafted to be full. To get the best look out of your bridal outfit, always use a petticoat. Petticoats come in a variety of lengths, so look for a full length crinoline. You can use one with hoops for the most fullness or with plain ruffles. Your dress will instantly take on a fairy tale look, whatever color you’re wearing, that is purely bridal. If a guest wears her dress puffed out, she is clearly trying to outdo the bride. (But you don’t know anyone like that, right?)

This bridal lehenga can be customized for hijabi coverage. And there's definitely a petticoat under there for the swoosh.

If your skirt doesn’t look full enough, consider purchasing two lehengas or dresses and have it altered for a super full skirt. This is easier with a semi-stitched lehenga because you can easily assemble the two skirts together. If you’re using a Muslim wedding dress, you’ll need a professional to make the alterations.

4. Wear a bridal belt

If your bridal outfit seems a little plain around the waist or you’re wearing a Moroccan caftan, don’t forget your rhinestone bridal belt. This accessory comes in many colors and is the perfect touch to elevate your bridal look.

6. Islamic bridal slippers are the best

Jutti, Islamic decorated slippers, are the best thing to wear for your wedding. But you’ll have to break them in before the big day as they are stiff in the beginning. Of course, you can always wear heels, but bridal jutti will really set you apart on your wedding day. They are available for grooms too!

7. Full jewelry sets you apart

Bridal jewelry is what makes the bride. These days, dressy garments can look the same, so a full set of bridal jewelry is what sets you apart from your guests. This means head jewelry, a crown piece that goes around the hairline of your hijab, and a triangular piece that falls from the side. You also need a close fitting necklace to cover your neck and a long one to decorate the chest area. Bridal bangles are indispensable, as are large earrings. Hand jewelry is optional, but if it goes with your henna – nice!

Your guests might wear a piece or two, but only the bride uses a full jewelry set. It doesn’t matter, either, if you mix and match, as long as it all comes together in the end.

8. Double dupattas for the bride are for royalty

And only a bride will show off more than one bridal dupatta. Double bridal dupattas wrap elegantly around the bride. One might be in a contrasting color for effect. You can use a heavy bridal dupatta or a light one. The layers always look royal. 9. Full makeup with heavy eyes

Heavy eye makeup is essential for a bridal look.

Makeup styles have changed, so it’s your choice whether to have a pale or bright lip. But some things are still indispensable for a bride, like heavy eye makeup. Your eyes will always be the focal point of your whole outfit, and even if you don’t use shimmer and glimmer, you should still outline your eyes in deep colors. Naturally a good foundation will be used, but your blush, contour and highlighting can be light or heavy, as you wish.

If you want a unique look who’s beauty will stun your guests, consider using well-placed gems around your eyes.

9. Add faux fur around your bridal cape
